Cranioplasty is a surgical procedure that repairs defects or deformities in the skull typically from traumatic injuries such as fractures or gunshot wounds.
Using 3D printing techniques allows the custom implant to be engineered with up to 65 percent less material than implants procured via conventional methods. “3D-printed PEEK cranial plates are an innovative solution that can improve patient care and expand the possibilities for precise, individualized neurosurgery,” stated Dr. Johannes Pöppe, senior attending surgeon, department of neurosurgery, University Hospital Salzburg. . The combination of 3D Systems’ printing technology — uniquely engineered for sterile environments — and the mechanical properties of PEEK is helping surgeons push boundaries.
The solution has been successfully executed in 40 patients undergoing cranioplasty surgeries in Switzerland, Austria, and Israel.
