Rookie forward Aaliyah Edwards has quickly earned the respect of her Washington Mystics teammates. Whenever Mystics fans heard Aaliyah Edwards’s name Friday night, a loud ovation typically followed. The rookie forward received the biggest cheers during Washington’s pregame introductions before an. After a first quarter filled with unsung plays — a block, a steal, an offensive rebound in traffic, a second-chance layup — Edwards exited for a rest to rousing applause.

Edwards’s path has looked different from that of her fellow rookies. She grew up in Kingston, Ontario, where her only exposure to basketball was the NBA. WNBA and college basketball broadcasts were not widely available.. As an international athlete subject to regulations on her student visa, Edwards faced limitations in her NIL activity. But she has found other ways to shine.

Friday was the second head-to-head meeting of Edwards and Reese, the latter of whom has earned endorsement deals with Reebok, Beats by Dre and Airbnb, among others. Reese’s celebrity was apparent throughout Entertainment and Sports Arena, where her No. 5 jersey dotted the stands.But it was the Mystics who emerged with their second consecutive win. With the rookies guarding each other for most of the night, Edwards finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

Friday’s performance continued a run of strong play by Edwards, who is averaging 12.7 points on 63 percent shooting, 9.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in six games this month. Three of those games were high-profile matchups against the Sky and the Fever. For the season, Edwards ranks fourthEven amid Edwards’s best statistical stretch so far, the Mystics say her intangibles continue to stand out.
