More than 150,000 people work in the 12,000-acre Irving development that’s one of country’s top business addresses.
“We are the epicenter of D-FW’s college-educated workforce,” said Hammond Perot, president of the Las Colinas Association.
Las Colinas started out with about 7,000 acres and grew to 12,000 acres with later land acquisitions., who grew his fortune in the insurance industry and property development. “It was the ranch me and my sisters grew up on,” said Ben’s son John Carpenter III. “He said we couldn’t keep it as it was because they were going to build this airport on the other side of us. We were all disappointed. We would have loved it to stay our family ranch.”The project was formally announced in September 1973, about the same time that DFW International Airport was opening its doors.
Tim Glass, director of strategic planning at the Las Colinas Association, said he’s seen estimates that the upfront investment in 1974 was more than $200 million. “Today, that would be close to $1 billion,” he said.
