Researchers at KIT have characterized the chemical processes occurring at the electrodes of lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries have become a crucial part of our daily lives, and they function thanks to the formation of a passivation layer during their initial charge cycle. Through simulat

discovered that the solid electrolyte interphase does not form directly at the electrode but instead accumulates in the solution.. Their results pave the way for optimizing the performance and lifetime of future batteries. The passivation layer on the anode surface is crucial to the electrochemical capacity and lifetime of a lithium-ion battery because it is highly stressed with every charging cycle. When the SEI is broken up during this process, the electrolyte is further decomposed and the battery’s capacity is reduced – a process that determines the lifetime of a battery.
