The project has been delayed by its removal from Alaska’s Statewide Transportation Improvement Plan, which makes it ineligible for certain federal funds.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Designed in the 1970s, the bridge at Steese Highway Mile 5, which crosses over Chena Hot Springs Road, has been planned for a strengthening project, due to its age and inadequacy for modern traffic needs.

Two roundabouts flank the bridge, along with alternate routes for heavy and oversized traffic to use. “In the 70s, the traffic flow looked a little different than it does today going up to the North Slope, and the project is really to build it up so it could withstand larger loads and folks wouldn’t have to use that bypass that have larger vehicles,” Tessen said.

She said the project would also make the bridge more structurally sound. However, efforts have been delayed by its removal from Alaska’s Statewide Transportation Improvement Plan . According to Tessen, current projections now place the start of construction in 2025, pushed back from summer 2024.
