Poverty-stricken Blackpool estate with corner shop so expensive it's nicknamed Harrods
Grange Park is one of many unassuming Blackpool estates. The streets are quiet, with the odd bus rumbling through every so often.
"We know that food inflation is running much higher across the country than the inflation rate overall; it is roughly 17% at the moment," he said. "We also know that inflation is a tax on the poorest, so the cost of food does matter. The poorer someone is, the higher the rate of inflation they experience because so much of their budget goes on energy and food. Retailers know that, but they avoid tackling it.
Consumers buying the same 75 items at Tesco Express, including Anchor Spreadable Butter, a Hovis white bread loaf and own-brand milk, would be spending an extra £15.73 on average a week than those shopping online or at a larger Tesco store, Which? found. The figure adds up over a year to more than £800 extra in a year.
There is a feeling among some that convenience stores and corner shops "can do what they like", the resident said. He praised those who help their locals but feels some have "ripped me off out without even thinking about it". Cheryl said that a number of residents rely on the local community hub, @ the Grange for support with food, adding that they 'help the community loads' with their pantry scheme.
“The message I am hearing loud and clear is that those who can least afford to, end up paying more for basic goods. That is what I am keen to discuss further with Tesco here in Blackpool.”
