By Gordon Lubold Close Gordon Lubold July 8, 2020 12:02 pm ET Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, the Army officer who testified last year against President Trump during House impeachment hearings, is retiring from the service under pressure from the White House, his attorney said Wednesday.

Col. Vindman, a Ukraine expert formerly assigned to the National Security Council at the White House, realized after the experience that his future in the Army would “forever be limited,” said the attorney, David Pressman. “Through a campaign of bullying, intimidation and retaliation, the president of the United States attempted to force [Col.] Vindman to choose between adhering to the law or pleasing a president,” the statement read.

“These are choices that no one in the United States should confront, especially one who has dedicated his life to serving it,” Mr. Pressman said. The House approved two articles of impeachment against Mr. Trump, alleging abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Mr. Trump was acquitted on both articles in the Senate earlier this year. Col. Vindman’s retirement was reported earlier by CNN.Copyright ©2020 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
