A former law enforcement leader and an immigration attorney claim there’s a misunderstanding about how much local police actually work with ICE."A lot of people believe that local law enforcement officers have the same authorities as ICE officers," said Jim Winder, the former Salt Lake County sheriff.
"They're really very separate missions.""Local law enforcement in many jurisdictions is actually prohibited from participating in those activities," Winder said."The immigrant community is becoming less willing to communicate and interact with their local law enforcement," Winder said. Immigration attorney Christopher Viscardo said that fear often keeps victims from calling the police. "The public thinks that every single police officer can stop them for immigration purposes," Viscardo said."If the people in the community don't feel like they can trust the police, then we're going to see more issues in our communities," Viscardo said."...Ensure that we continue to do the job that we're supposed to be doing, and that is continuing to reach out, communicate, and ensure that all of our citizens are maintained safely and with respect and dignity," Winder said. Both experts stated that the goal is to make sure people feel safe calling the police when they need help. The Gateway in downtown Salt Lake City has been listed for sale.According to an online listing from Jones Lang LaSalle, the 613,075-square-foot property, builtA Colombian man belonging to a protected class was detained by ICE while leaving immigration court.
