How President Joe Biden handles immigration and the southern border will have a significant impact on his efforts to beat former President Donald Trump.

by AUSTIN DENEAN | The National DeskFILE - President Joe Biden , second from the right, looks over the southern border, Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, in Brownsville, Texas. Walking with Biden are from l-r., Peter Flores, Deputy Commissioner, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Jason Owens, Chief, U.S. Border Patrol and Gloria Chavez, Sector Chief, U.S. Border Patrol.

Polling has shown Trump has a lead when it comes to who voters trust more to handle the issue, which is consistent with preferences voters have held for years. It also found immigration was ranking higher on priority lists as voters tune into a lengthy general election, outranking the economy in some polls in recent months.

“As more and more people focus on what independents want, you may see a continual downtrend unless there's some resurgence in active violent activity towards American citizens or a murder or something that's going to explode on the news,” said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center.

“Under Crooked Joe Biden, every state is now a border state. Every town is now a border town,” Trump saidBiden has tried to flip the immigration issue back onto Republicans after GOP lawmakers in the Housewith encouragement from Trump. The bill was never brought up for a vote and there have been no indications of another deal coming to fruition as election year politics and longstanding partisan disagreements continue to get in the way for lawmakers.
