Africa’s growth has been sluggish in recent years, but IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva believes new opportunities lie ahead.

When the world’s top finance officials and central bankers gather for the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank later this year, the future of Africa may take center stage. Due to be held in Marrakech, Morocco, in October, it will be the first IMF-World Bank meeting that has taken place on the continent in 50 years. The timing is ripe as African countries grapple with sluggish growth, food insecurity and debt distress.

The world economy could have collapsed during Covid, but it didn’t. Why? Because we came together, and we sailed through this crisis together. In Marrakech, we must do it again and especially concentrate on prospects for emerging markets and developing economies — the opportunities that the youthful population in Africa provides for Africa and for the rest of the world. You’re talking about the young demographic on the continent, which of course is part of the growth prospects for Africa.
