Defending girls cross country state champion Elizabeth Leachman of Boerne Champion didn’t finish Tuesday’s Region IV-5A race at Texas A&M- Corpus Christi because she was ill. Leachman, a junior, started the race but couldn’t finish due to her illness, Champion coach Sheila West and Leachman's parents confirmed to the Express-News . That doesn’t mean Leachman's cross country season is finished.

She clocked a 17:20.35 and won by nearly a minute. Leachman set a course record for 5,000 meters at Round Rock’s Old Settlers Park in winning last year’s Class 5A state championship by nearly two minutes.

Boerne Champion’s Elizabeth Leachman gets feet wet at U.S. Olympic Trials During the spring track and field season, Leachman won UIL state championships in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and set national high school records for 5,000 meters in indoor and outdoor track . In June, she was the youngest qualifier in the 5,000-meter run at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon where she was 26th.
