WalletHub's latest report ranks Illinois as the state with the best overall dental health, citing factors like low rates of dental-related pain and sleep disruptions, high access to fluoridated water, and robust Medicaid dental benefits.
A recent report by personal finance website WalletHub investigated the dental health landscape across U.S. states and the District of Columbia, identifying both the best and worst performers. The study, prompted by the alarming statistic that 35 percent of U.S. adults forwent dental exams or cleanings for over a year in 2023, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), aimed to shed light on the factors influencing oral health nationwide.
WalletHub meticulously analyzed all 50 states and the District of Columbia, utilizing approximately two dozen indicators to gauge dental health. These indicators encompassed a wide range of factors, including the percentage of adolescents who visited a dentist within the past year, the cost of dental care, and the number of dentists per capita. Each location was assigned a weighted average score based on these metrics, ultimately leading to a comprehensive ranking. The report unveiled that Illinois emerged as the state with the best overall dental health. This distinction was attributed, in part, to its low rate of residents experiencing frequent pain or sleep disruptions due to oral health issues. Additionally, Illinois boasts a minimal percentage of individuals reporting their teeth and mouth as being in 'poor' or 'fair' condition. Several other factors contributed to Illinois' top ranking, including a high proportion of residents with access to fluoridated water and the state's provision of extensive dental benefits through Medicaid.
