The Illinois State Police is issuing a warning about the dangers of failing to obey Scott's Law, commonly known as the Move-Over Law, following an increase in crashes involving emergency vehicles.
The Illinois State Police is urging drivers to follow Scott’s Law—commonly known as the Move-Over Law —after a troubling rise in crashes this year. With 25 crashes related to violations, 12 state troopers have been injured, and Chicagoland remains a hotspot for these dangerous incidents.Scott’s Law requires drivers to slow down and change lanes when approaching any vehicle with flashing emergency lights.
Violators face serious consequences, including hefty fines, license suspensions, and possible jail time for severe offenses. In the past eight weeks alone, six crashes tied to Scott’s Law violations occurred in the Chicago area, with three state troopers injured badly enough to require hospitalization. State Police say these incidents highlight the ongoing risks they face daily.Despite the law being on the books for over two decades, many drivers still fail to comply. To combat this issue, the Illinois State Police has partnered with Waze, sharing real-time GPS data through Google Cloud to alert drivers about nearby crashes, traffic stops, and other road hazards. The ISP plans to announce a new partnership this week that will expand efforts to spread awareness of Scott’s Law using additional vehicle technology. The message from troopers is clear: slowing down and moving over can prevent crashes and save lives
