The Illinois Secretary of State's Office will provide DMV services at the Chicago Auto Show, allowing attendees to obtain Real IDs, renew licenses, and more. Officials urge residents to apply for Real IDs before the May 7, 2025 deadline.

The Illinois Secretary of State's Office will be offering on-site Department of Motor Vehicles ( DMV ) services at this year's Chicago Auto Show , which runs from February 8th to February 17th. Attendees will have the opportunity to not only obtain a Real ID but also renew their vehicle registrations and driver's license s, sign up for the organ/tissue donor registry, and more.To apply for a Real ID, individuals must bring proof of identity and U.S. citizenship or lawful status.

Acceptable documents include an original or certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate, a U.S. passport or passport card, an Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766), a Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551), or an unexpired foreign passport with an affixed visa and approved Form I-94. For proof of Social Security number, applicants should present one of the following: a Social Security card, W-2, pay stub or printed electronic deposit receipt bearing your name and full SSN, SSA-1099 Form, or Non-SSA-1099 Form. Original documents are required for all proofs. Additional documentation, such as a utility bill, rental agreement, mortgage bill, or medical document, is also needed. Hard copy documents are required; images from a cellphone are not accepted, but printed copies are acceptable. Documents such as a credit/debit card, cancelled check, or current Illinois driver's license/ID are also necessary. Officials have urged Illinois residents not to delay obtaining a Real ID as the May 7th deadline approaches. Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias expressed concern about the potential surge in applications as the deadline nears, stating, 'We feel pressure ... Our facilities will swell up, and it will be a problem if people don’t get out and get their REAL ID’s.' As of December 31, 2024, the office had issued 3,295,078 Real ID-compliant driver's licenses and state IDs, representing only 25.34% of all currently valid driver's licenses and state IDs.
