Illegal reconnections hinder City Power's R10 billion debt recovery efforts

With a hefty debt of more than R10 billion across the City of Johannesburg, as well as persistent illegal power reconnections by individuals and businesses, which have had their electricity cut off due to defaulting on payments, City Power has urged government and citizens to do more to assist them in addressing both issues.

He explained that a relationship was needed to be built and forged between City Power, government and citizens to fight illegal reconnections, and urged the public to come forward and report the perpetrators. We call upon communities that have the security muscle that is already working on the ground to come forward to the police forums, patrollers and the neighbourhood watch to protect our communities and livelihoods.

He added: “In a desperate attempt not to be disconnected, the officials from the company tried to give our officials a bribe of about R100 000 when they were approached, and obviously our guys refused and disconnected the same business. So, it was disconnected twice.”
