Jose Ibarra, the Venezuelan national who was charged with murder in the death of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, appeared in court Tuesday.
He waived his right to a jury trial and requested a bench trial, with the motion granted.Speaking through a court interpreter, Ibarra, a non-U.S. citizen, replied to questions with yes or no answers.
He is facing a long list of charges, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call and concealing the death of another. An indictment accused Ibarra of repeatedly hitting Riley in the head with a rock and asphyxiating her, and also pulling up her clothing with the intention of raping her.
