The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tested 18 small SUVs for whiplash prevention, with only four earning good grades. The tests assessed how well seats absorb impact energy and support the head, neck, and spine. Results varied, with some models receiving acceptable, marginal, or poor ratings.

“They respond quickly, and we're very encouraged by the effort that they go through to try and perform well in our tests,” Edwards said. “I think they appreciate knowing where the goal post should be.” Whiplash tests aren’t new for IIHS, but it discontinued its previous version a few years ago after automakers had improved to the point where they were virtually all earning good ratings. “Everything was rated good, but we were still seeing a large range of performance in injury rates in the real world. And so, we wanted to do more,” Edwards said.Edwards said they used a dummy on a sled to test how the SUV seats absorbed the energy of an impact and supported the head, neck and spine.
