Swiatek won, 6-2, 6-4, on Thursday in Paris and will play for her third consecutive French Open title Saturday.
Coco Gauff had the belief heading into Thursday’s French Open semifinal against Iga Swiatek that she could be the one to take down the world No. 1 who has been ruthlessly cutting her way through the draw. Their head-to-head record stood at 10-1 in favor of Swiatek, and the 23-year-old from Poland had moved through her previous two matches, against Anastasia Potapova and then reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, dropping just two games combined.
Given her history against Gauff, who was playing in her third consecutive Grand Slam semifinal, there was little surprise Swiatek won the first set in a tidy 36 minutes. Gauff entered the match feeling she had nothing to lose and the pressure was all on Swiatek; her game plan seemed to be all aggression, all the time. That earned her 27 winners in the match to Swiatek’s 10, but such is the danger of playing Swiatek.
