Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story garnered six Golden Globe nominations, but here is why some would-be viewers are avoiding it.
While the film's events would likely induce some tears no matter what your family history, it seems that those of us who saw ourselves in Charlie and Nicole's eight-year-old son Henry felt the sting of the couple's split all the more acutely. My own parents got divorced when I was eight, and a coworker cautioned me against seeingon a first date, on the grounds that it might be triggering.
As I talked to friends about the film, I noticed that the ones who came from what were once termed "broken homes" seemed to have a different reaction. We weren't just watching the film; we were in it, tensing up at every raised voice and barbed comment, regressing to the past selves that many of us worked hard to hide. For some children of divorce, though, the movie proved cathartic, while some couldn't bring themselves to see it at all.

"That screaming match scene felt uncomfortably familiar, but thankfully their son was spared that. It feels pretty terrible to get divorced, no matter what the circumstances, but once you know in your heart that the marriage is over, end it, for the sake of the children involved. I worried they would get back together at the end and breathed a sigh of relief when they didn't. Not every love story has to end in harmony. Sometimes things break and it's better to leave them broken.
