It's produced by Margot Robbie, directed by Greta Gerwig and stars Issa Rae as President Barbie — and it's become a cultural moment before it even opens in cinemas. Here's what you need to know.
Gerwig and Robbie worked closely with production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer to build Barbie's 'Dreamhouse' and stay true to the hyper-feminine aesthetic of "Gerwig was inspired by the 50s soundstage musicals of Gene Kelly and Vincente Minnelli , using painted backdrops in her film."The physicality of the painted backdrop is really there. But it's creating an illusion, and that felt correct for Barbie.
"[Gerwig] is an incredible filmmaker, leader, director, and it shows in every single detail," says Ferrera. The Dreamhouse was inspired by mid-century modern architecture and design, a nod to the era when Barbie was invented, and involved so much fluoro pink thatFerrera says: "Greta knew every pink that ever existed and chose specifically which ones belonged in 'Barbie Land'."
Rae adds: "[Gerwig] paid homage to some of her favourite films in this movie. So if you're a lover of cinema, Barbie is cinema."Welcome to the Mattelverse
