Record View says if we are to pay more than our English friends, we need to start seeing the benefits in terms of improved public services
Nobody likes paying tax but it is the price we pay for vital public services such as schools and hospitals. In his budget yesterday, John Swinney set out a big hike in taxes for middle and high earners – claiming Scotland needed a change of direction from the austerity of the Tories.
But there are now many working families in Scotland paying a bigger tax bill than people in England on similar wages. We’re not talking about the super-rich either. If we are to pay more than our English friends, we need to start seeing the benefits in terms of improved public services. But up to now, there’s precious little evidence of improvements in schools and hospitals from this government. Just this week, we learned that waiting times for cancer treatment are at a record high.
The attainment gap in our schools between rich and poor is still far too big – despite a promise by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to sort it out. Our justice system, from delays in the courts to staffing levels at Police Scotland, simply does not function properly.
