In the Commanders’ 14-7 loss to the Giants, no one shined brighter than punter Tress Way. If only his teammates could find a way for him to have to play less.

Commanders punter Tress Way ended Sunday's game with 513 yards, the most of his decade-long career. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The Washington Commanders just lost to the worst football team in New York, which is saying something. They made a whole mess of Giants pass rushers look like the second coming of Lawrence Taylor, merely sneezing in the direction of quarterback Sam Howell and still getting a six-yard loss.

“I was just hitting it in general areas, and the guys did an awesome job of tackling and flying down there, getting in those guys’ faces, making them muff a couple, so it was good,” he added. “Those are special days if you end up coming out with a win, but is a tough one to swallow.” Or the Commanders’ offense could just set the stage for Way and let him work. But he never got a chance to attempt an 11th punt — or even come close to matching Leo Araguz’s NFL record of 16 in a game, set with the 1998 Oakland Raiders. Washington wanted to tie the score or something. Its offense teased us with competence, protecting Howell, moving the ball and collecting first downs during its final drive.

There will be countless stories written from this NFL Sunday, and probably no others will focus on a punter. Only this one, because Way, seriously, deserves a game ball almost every time the Commanders compete. That’s why I sought him out on this Sunday afternoon. There was no cape in his locker, by the way — just a white short-sleeved shirt he could easily wear beneath a plaid sport jacket. He spoke with gratitude about the support he has received from coaches, old and current, and teammates.
