CLEVELAND, Ohio -- If the Guardians don’t reach a deal with Craig Counsell to be their next manager, who do they turn to?Counsell is the leader in the clubhouse, but he has other opportunities. He interviewed with the Mets on Thursday and could return to the Brewers. The Astros have also expressed an interest.When the Guardians signed Terry Francona after the 2012 season, they gave him a four-year contract.
Meanwhile, Counsell was born and raised in Wisconsin. That’s a lot of obstacles for the Guardians to overcome, which is why they’ve been interviewing candidates sinceVogt, Seattle’s bullpen and quality control coach, must have made quite an impression in his interviews with Cleveland. He just retired as a player in 2022 and has never managed.
He is long on humor and inspiration. He received the nickname “I Believe” when he became a cult hero with the A’s. Mendoza, 43, has been the bench coach for Yankees for the last four years. Like Vogt, he was considered a candidate for the Giants job until Melvin was hired. He recently interviewed for the Mets vacancy. Before the 2023 season, he interviewed for the White Sox’s job.
He managed in the Arizona Fall League for two years and was a bench coach for the Gigantes of Carolina in Puerto Rico in 2014.Following the last out of the World Series, 130 players were declared free agents including Guardians Kole Calhoun, Reynaldo Lopez and Lucas Giolito.
