On Friday, the Constitutional Court will hear the IEC's bid to appeal the Electoral Court's judgment that found former president Jacob Zuma qualifies for election to the National Assembly.

A group of around 40 civil society organisations on Friday morning issued a statement calling on all stakeholders to respect the Constitutional Court's decision.

They further expressed support for the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, Corruption Watch, and the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution to act as friends of the court and condemned the social media attacks against these organisations.

"These are the very issues which need to be approached with an open mind to the persuasion of counsel and/or the second respondent in person," Zuma's lawyers argued, in a submission that suggests the former president may wish to address the apex court himself.

The IEC is seeking to appeal the Electoral Court’s findings that Zuma does qualify for election to the National Assembly, because his 15-month sentence for contempt of Constitutional Court could not be appealed and therefore did not qualify as a"sentence" under Section 47 of the Constitution. The Electoral Commission of SA has responded to the letter regarding the removal of former president Jacob Zuma from the list of Members of Parliament of uMkhonto weSizwe Party .
