Iditarod announces new Expedition Program

For a fee, these individuals will be allowed to ride the same route as racers, but they’ll be allowed to receive outside help. An Expedition Musher will not be eligible for a cash prize. According to Iditarod CEO Rob Urbach, the program is modeled after similar ones offered through Tour de France and Ironman Triathlons.

Norwegian billionaire and philanthropist Kjell Inge Røkke has been announced as the first Expedition Musher. He will have his own dog team and staff that will work alongside Iditarod’s kennels and veterinarians. Røkke has been involved with several philanthropic efforts, including an initiative to remove plastic waste from the ocean.According to the ITC, Røkke has pledged hundreds of thousands of dollars to Iditarod, including $25,000 in “direct support to the ITC,” $2,000 to each musher registered by November 28th, 2025, and $170,000 in “community support for the 17 Alaskan Native villages along the Northern and Southern routes.”UPDATE: 2 aircrew eject after Korean F-16 skids into grass on takeoff at Eielson Air Force BaseFirst large staffed fire in Alaska this season threatens buildingsBig fish, no ticket: North Pole woman reels in largest halibut thus far, but with no derby ticket
