The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race 2026 concluded with an awards banquet in Nome, Alaska. Mushers and their dogs were recognized for their achievements, including multiple awards for the winner, Holmes, and other notable finishers like Jesse Terry, Jeff Deeter, Sam Paperman, and Richie Beattie.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The “Last Great Race on Earth” is officially over for 2026 and all the awards and praises were dished out at the annual banquet for the finishers in Nome Sunday evening., was given multiple awards and prizes: He earned the Alaska Air Transit Spirit of Iditarod Award for reaching McGrath first, the GCI Dorothy G.

Page Halfway Award for reaching the halfway point first, the First to the Yukon Award, the Bristol Bay Native Corporation Fish First Award, the Ryan Air Gold Coast Award and the Northrim Bank Achieve More Award. He also earned the Northern Air Cargo Herbie Nayokpuk Memorial Award, an award that epitomizes Herbie Nayokpuk’s spirit of mushing in the Iditarod. Holmes received hand-crafted moccasin slippers as well as ivory earrings and bracelets, presented by the Nayokpuk family. In total, Holmes earned $80,700 just in prize money, and more than $90,000 when factoring in his checkpoint winnings.It wasn’t just Holmes who won awards, but also some of his dogs. Polar and Zeus both earned the City of Nome Lolly Medley Memorial Golden Harness Award for being outstanding lead dogs. The Rookie of the Year award went to Canada’s own Jesse Terry. Terry placed 14th and took 10 days, 13 hours, 36 minutes and three seconds to finish the race. He earned $20,000. Fairbank resident Jeff Deeter earned the Nome Kennel Club Fastest Time from Safety to Nome. This award goes to the finishing musher in the top third of the field who had the fastest time from Safety to Nome. He placed third and took nine days, 15 hours, 10 minutes and 37 seconds to finish the race, earning $55,700. Rookie Sam Paperman from Seward earned the Howard Farley Sr. Memorial award presented by the Nome Kennel Club. This award honors perseverance on the trail. Paperman placed 24th in the race. He earned $500 from the award.Rookie Richie Beattie from Fairbanks earned the Lynden “Committed through the Last Mile” Red Lantern Award for being the last-place finisher in the race. He earned $1,000. Hanna Lyrek from Norway earned the Glenfarne Alaska LNG Most Improved Musher Award. Lyrek placed 11th in the race, earning $23,800. Veteran musher Ryan Redington from Knik earned the Donlin Gold Sportsmanship Award. The award is given out to a person who is nominated by their peers on the race as the best sportsman on the trail. The 2023 Iditarod champion placed 13th this year and earned $21,200. Veteran musher Paige Drobny, from Cantwell, earned the Hilcorp Alaska Most Inspirational Musher Award. She placed fourth in the race and earned $45,700. Veteran musher Riley Dyche from Big Lake earned the Leonhard Seppala Humanitarian Award for demonstrating outstanding dog care while remaining competitive throughout the race. He finished seventh and earned $34,200.“As the 54th running of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race comes to a close, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to every musher and canine athlete who made the journey across the state. Each team that traveled the historic trail to Nome carries forward a legacy deeply rooted in Alaska’s history—one that reflects resilience, respect for the land, and the enduring bond between mushers and their dogs.
