Authorities on Friday afternoon identifiedTwo backcountry skiers killed in an avalanche the day before.
Crews on Thursday, May 9, 2024, are seen during search, rescue and recovery efforts after three people were buried in an avalanche on Lone Peak near Draper, Utah . One individual was hoisted to the base of the mountain via helicopter. The other two were killed, and weather issues delayed their recovery until Friday, May 10. The identities have been released of two skiers who died in an avalanche in the Lone Peak Canyon.
The men were identified as 23-year-old Andrew Cameron from Utah, and 32-year-old Austin Mallet from Montana. Officials did not say exactly where in each state the men lived.Officials with the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake said the three men started their trek into the backcountry at 5 a.m. Thursday from Hidden Valley Park in Sandy.Cameron and Mallet were buried in several feet of snow. The third skier was able to climb out and call 911 emergency dispatchers.
The third skier, whose identity was not released, was transported off the mountain and taken to the hospital around noon.
