iDE Nepal iDE harnesses innovative design techniques and an intimate understanding of its end users’ needs to spark wealth-building revolutions in poor, rural areas in developing countries. Its relentless focus on listening to prospective customers and watching them at work are practices that many first-world entrepreneurs and VCs would do well to emulate.

iDE’s design team, embedded in country offices around the world, works with other in-country staff to design products, services, and business models beneficial to local communities. Designs are quickly prototyped and demonstrated for would-be consumers in what iDE describes as a human-centered design process.

iDE also works with local governments to configure logistical and financial infrastructure that allows rural farmers equipped with the newly designed tools to generate cash flow through improved market access. Prajuna’s clients’ difficulties are exacerbated by rural flight. Many Nepalese men leave the country to work manual jobs in the Middle East or Asia, leaving women—traditionally not considered credible businesspeople by Nepali banks and companies—to run family farms.

After a few years of generating banner profits from the greenhouses, the farmer invested in an iDE-designed, locally manufactured drip irrigation system which generated even higher crop yields by dramatically optimizing water use.
