'You're lucky if you can afford to feed yourself, never mind get ID to vote, it's stupid'

The 2023 local elections are almost upon us. And this time round, the voting process will be slightly different.

With the controversies in mind, LancsLive took to the streets of Blackburn, a traditional Labour stronghold in the so-called Red Wall, to see what residents think about the new rule. "How many people in this country can not afford to go abroad and don't have a driving licence?" She continued: "I think they should have photo ID for everybody and we're all treated equal and I mean, they shouldn't be able to stop people from voting. You have every right to vote."

Lancashire local election candidates for 2023 "I used to go religiously, I thought well, people fought for us to have the vote so, we need to do it. I'll be honest lately, I haven't done it. The last two, three years, because it's all the same. The richer get richer and the poorer just get poorer. No one and I mean no one, is there to help you when you need it."

"They [council] haven't been round and said, right fill these forms in to get your ID, they've just left it to the last minute and it's just ridiculous." As a result, the 2015 Conservative Party manifesto committed to considering the new regulation. Two friends from Blackburn, who did not wish to be named, are against the idea. They said: "It's stupid, not a lot of people have ID, what about the homeless people?"
