Legendary designer Peter Horbury has brought us iconic designs from Volvo, Ford, and even reinvented the London Taxi cab. RIP.
"This time we kept the toy—and threw away the box!" It was the Paris Show in 1996, and Volvo design chief Peter Horbury had just revealed thethat instantly consigned the Swedish automaker's rigorously rectilinear design language to history. It was a line that was at once playfully iconoclastic and quietly confident; a line that reflected the engaging personality of the British designer who has died the age of 73.
, smilingly directing disbelieving journalists to look again at the Ford's doors, which had broad window frames similar to those first seen on the high-performance, V-8-powered German coupe. In 1979, Horbury became a consultant designer to Volvo, where, over a seven-year stint, he took on responsibility for the production interior and exterior design concepts for the Dutch-built 440, 460, and 480 models.
The allure of Volvo, whose cars were seen as tough and functional, was obvious."Here was a company which had everything going for it," Horbury said."If you could design something that was really attractive, you would have one of the most desirable cars you could want." From the C70 on, Horbury's Volvos oozed a carefully honed and cleverly understated elegance that was modern yet somehow undeniably Swedish.
