Looking for a slice of nostalia? This fried chicken spot will take you back in time.
There is just one location left and it is in South Carolina. If you ever find yourself rolling through the great state of South Carolina with a hankering for some good fried chicken and you happen to appreciate nostalgia, too, you just might be in luck.
Because there is exactly one Yogi Bear’s Honey Fried Chicken left in the country, and it is located in Hartsville, South Carolina. Check the menu, and you can get a basket — three pieces, two rolls and two individual sides — for $8.35. The Boo Boo Basket, which is two pieces, a roll and a side, is just $6.25. And, of course, there’s a Picnic Basket — nine pieces, six rolls, a pint of coleslaw, a pint of mashed potatoes and three orders of French fries — for just $22.95. You can also get pork chops and fried seafood, livers and gizzards, chicken sandwiches and fried bologna sandwiches, banana pudding and apple turnovers, too. The menu is impressive, and the prices are pretty darned good for 2026.Back to the fact that the place in Yogi Bear’s Honey Fried Chicken. Yes, it’s that Yogi. The cartoon bear. There’s even a photo of Yogi on the sign, taking a big bite out of a drumstick. It turns out, Yogi Bear Fried Chicken dates all the way back to the 1960s. Gene Broome, an entrepreneur in South Carolina, was working on perfecting and selling his honey fried chicken and he was looking for a celebrity to market it. When he came up empty in that pursuit, he found a willing parter in Hanna-Barbera’s merchandising supervisor which licensed Yogi Bear out to Broome to use for the restaurant. And Yogi Bear Honey Fried Chicken took off, expanding to 20 locations, before Hardee’s bought it off Broome in 1968 for $1 million. Hardee’s was not really interested in expanding Yogi Bear’s Honey Fried Chicken as a brick-and-mortar option, though. Instead, the chain essentially just bought Broome’s recipe, and so the fried chicken locations began to dwindle. And by the 1970s there was one Yogi Bear Honey Fried Chicken left in the world. It’s the same on that still stands in Hartsville today. Is it good? Well, the menu certainly makes the mouth water, and the Yelp reviews give it 3.6 stars out of 4. “Food and service was excellent,” the last review, written on Oct. 19, 2025, read. “Mashed potatoes were an excellent side choice. Can’t beat Yogi Bear Chicken.” That, and the nostalgia of it all and the fact that, again folks it’s the last one left, make it worth a road trip or a side trip for those making their way through the Palmetto State.
