The rapper was nominated for four awards including Best New Artist at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
When it came down to choosing an outfit for Ice Spice's first Grammy Awards, she knew she had to pay tribute to the borough she calls home. The “Princess Diana” rapper—who was nominated in four different categories that evening —ended up opting for an early aughts mainstay for her red-carpet look, choosing none other a custom denim ensemble by Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons for music's biggest night.
Minutes within Ice Spice stepping on the red carpet, the look became an instant favorite on social media, with the rapper's loyal legion of “munchkins” applauding the nostalgic look. The two-piece outfit was constructed of the brand's signature deep indigo denim complete with a fur-lined cropped jacket, a floor-length, high slit maxi skirt, and of course the instantly recognizable embroidered cat logo adorning the back of both pieces. The look had a sustainable element as well, utilizing up-cycled materials via a vintage vest from Daniel's Leather New York for the outfit's textured trim. “I brought that Bronx swag to the carpet in my custom Baby Phat look,” Ice Spice tells Harper's BAZAAR. “It's one of my favorite looks I've done.”The outfit was also a clear homage to early aughts hip-hop icons like Lil Kim and Missy Elliott who often rocked Baby Phat on and off the red carpet. It was a perfect sartorial linkup considering Ice Spice's upcoming debut album will be appropriately titled, Y2K. It's a project that the rapper says she's “the most excited” to share with fans later this year. If anything, the 2024 Grammys simultaneously represented the culmination of the whirlwind year that was 2023 for the rapper as well as the start of a new era ahead of her first full-length effort. For now however, she's still relishing in the impact that her work has had not just within the Recording Academy but culture at large. Only a handful of women in hip-hop have been recognized by the Grammys over the decades, and Ice Spice knows it's an acknowledgement that's deserved. . It's also something the artist doesn't plan to take lightly, either. “It's still unreal to me that ‘Barbie World’ is my second collab with Nicki and now it's gonna forever live in the Barbie movie,” she says. “I'm overjoyed to be recognized and awarded for my talents because four nominations is a win in itself.”It all circles back to Ice Spice wanting to celebrate the city and culture that raised her—whether it be via her music, her fashion, or anything else. Accolades are appreciated—and warranted—but it will also always be about the creative journey that's brought the rapper to this very moment—and what comes next. “I'll always think about what it took to get here,” she says. “And no matter what happens, I'm forever grateful.” Stylist: Timothy Luke | Makeup: Karina Milan | Hair: Self-styled by Ice Spice
