ICE conducted a large-scale operation targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records, resulting in over 460 arrests across multiple states.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) conducted a nationwide operation spanning January 21st to 22nd, resulting in over 460 arrests across various states. This marked ICE 's first significant enforcement action under the Trump administration.
The operation, spearheaded by ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), focused on apprehending individuals with criminal histories, including charges and convictions for offenses such as sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, and drug-related crimes. Nationals from a diverse range of countries were among those arrested, encompassing Afghanistan, Angola, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Senegal, and Venezuela. In addition to the arrests, ICE issued over 420 detainers, which are formal requests to local law enforcement agencies to notify ICE when undocumented individuals are released from custody. These detainers were primarily targeted at individuals facing charges for serious crimes, including homicide, sexual assault, and robbery. The operation specifically targeted undocumented immigrants with criminal records.Arrests occurred in numerous states, although precise details regarding all 460 arrests were not publicly disclosed. Tom Homan, Trump's designated border czar, emphasized that ICE is prioritizing public safety threats, stating, 'Right out of the gate it’s public safety threats, those who are in the country illegally that have been convicted, arrested for serious crime.' He further clarified, 'But let me be clear. There's not only public safety threats that will be arrested, because in sanctuary cities, we're not allowed to get that public safety threat in the jail, which means we got to go to the neighborhood and find him.' As the immigration landscape is anticipated to undergo substantial changes, FOX 5 NY will continue to provide comprehensive coverage on this evolving situation through reporters Jessica Formoso and Stephanie Bertini
