Persistent below-freezing temperatures in Cleveland, Ohio, have caused a rapid increase in ice coverage on Lake Erie, reaching nearly 13% as of Tuesday. The ice is primarily concentrated in the shallower western basin near Toledo, leaving areas like the Port of Cleveland still ice-free. While below the average for this time of year, the ice coverage has grown significantly since the weekend. This early ice formation could influence the likelihood of lake-effect snow.

It was zero on Saturday, inching up to nearly 1% coverage on Sunday, 4.85% on Monday and 12.79% on Tuesday. Beyond that, temperatures are more difficult to predict, he said, but “the probability is there for us to be below freezing for a while.” Other factors contribute to lake-effect snow, including where the ice has formed and the orientation of the wind as it blows over the lake.
