ICE is discontinuing its use of the Etowah County Detention Center as soon as possible, according to a statement from the agency. The statement said the facility 'has a long history of serious deficiencies.'

identified deficiencies in a range of areas including food service, health care and environmental health and safetyAs of 2016, an average of about 300 ICE detainees were incarcerated in the Etowah County facility at any given time under a federal contract that allows ICE to house detainees there in exchange for a per diem of $45 per inmate per day.

“Mayorkas has committed to review detention facilities to assess whether their conditions are humane, meet applicable standards, and represent a responsible use of appropriated funding,’’ the statement continues. “We’ve never in 25 years, before I was here, until today, had a deficiency that wasn’t corrected or scored subpar on any inspection and that includes the Office of Detention Oversight – they last inspected us in December 2021…the Office of Professional Responsibilities, which we’ve had inspections annually and ever inspection we’ve ever had, and the health department, have always been above board,’’ he said.

In recent years, ICE has reduced its use of the Glades County Detention Center, in part due to persistent and ongoing concerns related to the provision of detainee medical care, and because the facility is of limited operational significance.
