Ernesto Sagás, a political science and immigration policy expert at Colorado State University, noted that Trump built his political image on being an immigration hardliner. Despite these concerns, criminologist Alex Piquero, a professor at the University of Miami and a former director of the Bureau of Justice Statistics, stated that statistical evidence does not support the notion that immigrants commit more crime than native-born Americans. While data collection on immigration status during arrests is limited, Piquero's research, conducted in collaboration with colleagues in Texas, revealed that American citizens were 1.19 times more likely to be arrested than immigrants, controlling for other factors. This trend held true for violent crimes and drug offenses as well. Homan defended the administration's stance, asserting that entering the US without permission is a crime in itself, violating Title Eight, the United States Code 1325.
