ICE agents attempted to enter a Chicago elementary school but were denied access by school staff. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) officials stated that the agents were not allowed to speak to students or staff and that the district operates under policies protecting families' immigration statuses. This incident occurred amidst a recent policy change allowing federal agents to arrest illegal immigrants in sensitive areas, including schools.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were denied entry to a Chicago elementary school Friday, a city school system official said. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Chief Education Officer Bogdana Chkoumbova said in a press conference that agents came to Hamline Elementary School. She explained that school staff kept the agents outside of the building and contacted CPS legal and security officials, acting in accordance with district protocol.

The ICE agents were not allowed into the school and were not permitted to speak to any students or staff members, Chkoumbova said. 'Here is the bottom line: Our students and staff are safe.' Chkoumbova added that CPS protocol, as well as both state and city guidance, prohibits the district from inquiring about families' immigration statuses. Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates also spoke at the press conference. She told the community protecting CPS students and staff is the union's 'priority at this moment.' Crisis in the Classroom (CITC) reached out to ICE to confirm the incident and to learn what prompted the agents' visit to Hamline Elementary School, but did not immediately receive a response. This week, the Biden administration announced a policy change allowing federal agents to arrest illegal immigrants in 'sensitive areas,' including schools. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also shared photos to X Friday of individuals in handcuffs boarding a plane. “President Trump is sending a strong and clear message to the entire world: if you illegally enter the United States of America, you will face severe consequences,' Leavitt captioned the images. Following President Donald Trump's November election victory, Chicago Public Schools passed a resolution promising to protect its students from federal immigration officials. The document said CPS would not assist ICE officials with 'the enforcement of federal civil immigration law.' 'Therefore, ICE will not be permitted access to CPS facilities or personnel except in the rare instances in which CPS is provided with a criminal warrant,' the resolution read.
