An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent saved the life of an unresponsive baby at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York after the child stopped breathing, according to the Department of Homeland Security .
DHS on Thursday shared security footage of the incident, noting that the infant was waiting in line with family at a security checkpoint when the agent took action. "The panic of the child’s family and nearby passengers were heard by an ICE agent stationed at a checkpoint,". "This heroic officer immediately sprang into action -- rushing toward the cries, taking the child, and performing a Heimlich maneuver that restored the infant’s breathing after nearly two minutes."This officer’s extraordinary bravery embodies the selfless service of DHS law enforcement," according to DHS. The child's condition after the incident was not immediately released. While officials did not name the agent or the child,The incident happened at a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint, where travelers have faced long delays amid a federal staffing shortage. ICE agents have been deployed to major airports across the country, including JFK, to assist with crowd control and other duties as the TSA deals with staffing shortages tied to an ongoing government shutdown.
