Spain and Portugal on Monday braced for the first day of a week-long heatwave that meteorologists expected to push thermometres above 44 Celsius (111 Fahrenheit) in parts of the Iberian Peninsula and further heighten the risk of wildfires.

"This heatwave is going to be generally more intense, more widespread and a little longer-lasting than the two we had in July," he added.
