💬 “We’re supposed to be a democracy in this country” Ambulance workers and other emergency NHS staff could leave the profession if the Government presses ahead with controversial laws on strike action
in certain sectors during strikes. Unions and workers would have to comply with these or face losing protections against being sued or dismissed.
“The Government is supposed to be working for us, so how does this fit into democracy? It doesn’t. I will leave the NAS [National Ambulance Service] if they try and make us not strike. I’m proud of what I do, but it’s that serious a principle from my point of view.” “Paramedics and other [emergency workers] are staying on average about three years. We’re losing our experienced workers, and you only get experience by staying. But people aren’t going to stay if they can see a much better opportunity elsewhere. They’ve got to feed their families, and if there are better options in other parts of healthcare; they’re going to leave and go private.”Ed Lousley, 39, an emergency medical technician, said pay and retention was the focus of the protest.
