Wanting to serve the public, Avrey Anderson opted to run for district clerk because he couldn't run for county commissioner. County judge was out of the question because he “would have lost.”
Avrey Anderson, 19, of Dripping Springs, unseated a veteran Republican incumbent for the district clerk position in Hays County. Anderson, a Democrat, spent $0 on his campaign and managed to win a tight race.Hays County’s newest elected district clerk called his election win on Nov. 8 a “little bit shocking.”
Democrats swept the Hays County local races on Election Day. The county commissioners court has a new Democratic majority, and Democrats won every major office on the countywide ballot, including county clerk and county treasurer. The teenager from Dripping Springs said he owns a small landscaping company and decided to run for office so he could be a public servant for the community. He opted to run for district clerk because he didn’t meet residency requirements to run for county commissioner, and if he had run for county judge, he “would have lost.”The District Clerk’s Office is effectively the “recorders of history for the county,” said Kelly Higgins, the incoming district attorney for Hays County.
To those who would question his youth or lack of experience, Anderson said he “could easily point out that most legislators that are elected, in fact, have no clue what they’re doing” when they take office.
