New ideas are possible when one breaks from the status quo.
I've been watching all that's been going on at Columbia University and on other campuses. Back in 1968, I was at a similar uprising at Columbia University, in student unrest that was tied up with the anti-Vietnam War protests all across the U.S.At the time, I was a first-year student at Pace University in New York City and also the superintendent of two apartment buildings on East 97th Street in Manhattan.
New ideas are possible when one breaks from the status quo, and the protests set the foundation for my involvement in other areas of social activism in New York City, like the gay rights movement and serving the gay community during the AIDS epidemic.I came from a family of missionaries to Africa, and as a result, I have always been service-oriented. But I wasn't deeply radicalized until those days at Columbia in 1968.
