The star’s troubled relationship with his dad drove him to quit Australia. Now he returns to appear in a famous play with its own complex father-son dynamic.
. “Marty and Alan came up to me afterwards and said, ‘We want you for this part, just give us two weeks.’ I called my agent who said, ‘I hate it when they do this, they lead actors up the garden path,’ ” LaPaglia says, laughing. “And two weeks later, to the day, my agent calls back and says, ‘I don’t know what to say, you got the part.’ ”
, and settled in New York where, in 1997 LaPaglia was cast as Eddie Carbone in a stage production of Arthur Miller’s. The role would prove pivotal for not only the Tony Award but also because LaPaglia and Miller, then in his early 80s, became friends.LaPaglia cherished his friendship with the playwright, who among other things taught him not to over-analyse the words on the page.
LaPaglia was with the rest of his family at Eddy’s bedside when his father died, an event that came without a filmic ending. “We never really resolved anything. He didn’t really want to. And I was okay with it. There was no deathbed ‘Let’s make it up.’ He told me to go f--- myself right to the end, basically. And in a weird way, I remember thinking, I was relieved that he didn’t do a sudden deathbed turnaround. I wouldn’t have known what to do with it.
