★★ I was desperate for Accidental Death of an Anarchist to end 🖊️ FionaLondonarts
“Less is more” is one of those tiresome phrases that older people deploy, to the eye-rolling frustration of younger and livelier souls. Yet irksomely it proves almost overwhelmingly to be the case – and this is another example.gives an undoubtedly bravura central performance, but one that is so big and overpowering that it bludgeons everything and everyone else into submission. I was certainly not the only audience member desperate for the frenzy to stop and this play to end.
Dario Fo’s 1970 political farce was inspired by the real-life death of an anarchist while he was being detained in police custody; every line of the original text was drawn directly from transcripts of the police interviews. Tom Basden’s new adaptation is bang up to date , encompassing the myriad failings of the contemporary Metropolitan Police Service.
However the notion that audiences will reflect upon weighty issues of police corruption and brutality amidst the would-be hilarity and escalating mayhem, as per Fo’s wish, is entirely fanciful: there is no space for drawing breath, let alone serious contemplation. Director Daniel Raggett should have overseen this more strictly.
