Pixar gave an SFGATE editor a rare glimpse inside its Emeryville offices to show the process behind “Elemental” storyboards.

FILE: A giant model of Luxo Jr., Pixar’s iconic desktop lamp mascot, is seen at the animation company’s campus in Emeryville, Calif.A creative-looking cast of employees mill about, fueling up on free Equator coffee and fancy soda fountain drinks before they journey upstairs, past “Elemental” and “Lightyear” concept art galleries, into their offices, where they’ll spend all day crafting movies guaranteed to make you cry.

“I meandered a bit. There’s a conception that you have to be super targeted the whole time to arrive in places like this or have a career like this, but people can get here in different ways. It doesn’t have to be a straight shot. It wasn’t for me.” and now “Elemental,” a “Romeo and Juliet”-style romance between two elements: Ember, a female flame, and Wade, a male body of water.I had a general idea of how storyboarding works, but with all of Pixar’s CGI magic, it’s easy to forget that the filmmaking process starts with chicken-scratch sketches. Typically, Tang receives a scripted scene and then uses a Wacom tablet and stylus to draw out what’s essentially a comic strip where each “board” shows a progression of action or emotion.

“You’re trying to create a person that has fears, hopes, dreams, secrets — things they keep secret from other people, things they keep secret from their selves, all the nuances of a living, breathing person,” Tang said. Or in the case of “Elemental,” a living, breathing female flame who falls in love with a living, breathing puddle of water.
