I used to be a pro-life gun owner | Opinion

Second, I’m much quicker on my cellphone than I am with my weapon, so if I witnessed a crime, I’d be able to document it for law enforcement much better than to try playing their part.

Then, a few years later, I found myself in Dublin, speaking at their annual March for Life. During a car ride, some new local friends and I were making small talk when the driver pointed off into the distance. He said, “See over there? That’s where the shooting happened.” No. Just a regular guy. A drug deal gone bad. It was so perplexing to hear non-Americans talking about “shootings” in such a non-American way. This story led to another passenger voicing her opposition to guns, and like the good Texan I am, I took the contrasting view.

And one day, while reading a Gawker article, I learned that sometimes the “good guy with a gun” accidentally gets killed because when the cops show up they don’t necessarily know who’s “good” and who’s “bad.” I asked him to be careful, and the disease grew.
