I've been using the Galaxy Z Flip 5 for a few weeks now, and I really, really love it. But it didn't start out that way.
This story is part of our Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2023 coverage It’s been a little under a month since I got my Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, and throughout most of that time, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every second with it. I was already quite fond of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 last year, and the Flip 5 addresses my main complaint of its predecessor: the cover screen.
Related The cover screen makes a bad first impression After reviewing the Motorola Razr Plus earlier this year, I’ve become hooked on using full Android apps on the cover screens of folding flip phones. Having the flexibility to do whatever I want — watch YouTube videos, scroll through Twitter, or browse a to-do list — without ever opening my phone is incredible. It makes this form factor of folding phones more useful than they’ve ever been.
What if you want to do more than what these dozen or so widgets offer? Samsung lets you tap a toggle in the Settings app to allow apps on the cover screen … but only barely. Right now, the list of supported cover screen apps for the Z Flip 5 includes Google Messages, Samsung Messages, WhatsApp, Google Maps, YouTube, and Netflix. That’s it.
Samsung launched Good Lock in 2016, and since then, it’s turned into an ultrapowerful customization suite for Samsung phones. You can use it to customize your recent apps page, add powerful theming tools, and more. It also allows you to run any app you want on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 cover screen. And despite the hack-y steps you have to take to get full app support on the cover screen, all of the apps I’ve used work surprisingly well. Some are a bit more squished than they are on the Razr Plus cover screen, but it’s not a bad experience by any means. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is more than capable of running virtually any app on its cover screen, and Good Lock proves it.
