They're calling for a ban on artificial turf being used on all professional sports fields for game days.
CINCINNATI - As the Bengals hit the practice field for the first time on Wednesday, lawmakers in Columbus are looking at possibly changing the rules on what's under their feet.
“We did an internal study of all of our athletes that tore their ACLs, and I think it was 90% that tore their ACLs on field turf,” said Kremchek. “When you have real grass and dirt, when your cleat goes in and a player hits or twists, the dirt or the grass gives way,” said Kremchek.“When you have artificial turf, it’s made to look nice, but when you put your cleat in it, the cleat gets stuck, and all that stress goes from the ankle to the knee,” said Kremchek.“At this point, we’re not there, and until we get there, I think we have to go back to the old school to save our athletes,” said Kremchek.
“During this same time period, I’ve seen athletes of all skill levels become bigger, faster, and stronger. That plays into the injury pattern as well,” said Grawe.
