I've made $10 million in sales for my Amazon coffee grinder brand. Here's how I got started and found success.
His coffee-accessories business generates millions in sales on Amazon. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Robert Gomez, an entrepreneur based in Atlanta. Insider has verified revenue and profit with documentation. The following has been edited for length and clarity.
I launched Kaffe with a single product: a coffee grinder that came in only one color. I spent day and night thinking about the best way to position the coffee grinder so it would get to the top of Amazon's rankings. Since I had already worked on my other brand for several years at this point, I had some experience with the Amazon platform. My sales started to grow.
My goal is to have a real business with longevity, not a side business. Kaffe's hero product is its coffee grinder, but we also now sell other coffee-related products like a French press, milk frother, and storage containers. I have 10 employees now but want the company to continue to grow. Kaffe's products still perform well in competition with those brands. We've always prioritized branding and making sure we have plenty of images that show our products' features. We've found that some brands don't spend much on branding, so that sets us apart.
At the same time, you're not going to get sales if you have fewer reviews, a higher price, and the same look as your competitors. If you can show potential shoppers your product is better in some way, eventually it will move up the rankings.
