is a huge decision. The worry about the quality of care that your parent is going to get is always at the back of your mind. I didn’t feel as though any of the facilities within our area were comfortable enough for my mum. So we moved her further out, to an NHS care home that my friend had recommended. I went to visit the home unexpectedly, so it would be a surprise for them. I just needed to see what was going on, and how it would feel for her.
Caring for someone you love wasn’t the hardest part for me. It was the bureaucracy that came with it. It’s dealing with services that let you down, time and time again. The stress of looking after my mum severely impacted my health. It takes a toll on the whole family. It is just so draining. Since mum has been in care, some of that stress has been relieved but nevertheless, you’re always waiting for that phone call. If ever I get a call from the care home, my immediate feeling is fear.
